Note: British cruisers built during the 19th century carried little armour and were classified by size as 1st, 2nd or 3rd class cruisers. 3rd Class cruisers had a displacement of between 1,500 and 3,000 tons. Later cruisers carried armour and the larger cruisers were called Armoured Cruisers and 2nd class cruisers were called Light Cruisers.
